The majority of the sales for New Super Mario Bros. 2, 1.1 million, comes from Japan due to the game launching there three weeks before anywhere else. The game has sold 480,000 units in North America and 390,000 in Europe.

The game is currently tracking 33 percent behind New Super Mario Bros. (DS) which had sold three million units during the same number of weeks after release. Current 3DS sales are almost identical to the DS. 20.1 million for the 3DS and 20.9 million for the DS.

If the game continues to track 33 percent below New Super Mario Bros. (DS) it will sell between five million and six million units at the end of 2012.
